GPS trackers are helping scientists understand the navigation abilities of pigeons.
We’re always interested to see just how GPS technology is being used to improve the world we live in. So, here’s an interesting tidbit to add to your latest list of GPS tracking news headlines….
GPS trackers were recently used to study the brain patterns of pigeons as they navigate in different environments. The study yielded some interesting facts that showed pigeons are actually quite similar to humans in the way they utilize landmarks and recognize others.
To conduct the study, scientists utilized EEG machines and GPS trackers (fitted to the heads of the birds) to study the brain waves of pigeons in correlation with their precise location. Turns out, pigeons think a little harder in demanding city environments and relax a little more in wide open spaces.– This is quite similar to humans paying more attention when we’re driving in the city, and letting things slide a little when we’re out on a lonely highway. The study also indicated that pigeons use landmarks as guides and recognize other pigeon colonies, qualities which are very similar to human behavior.
Now that we’ve covered bird business, maybe it’s time to take a look at the navigation habits of your business. Did you know that GPS trackers can help you manage your business in a highly effective and efficient manner? Don’t let your profits go to the birds…check out GPS tracking systems at TrackingTheWorld.

Farmers are using GPS trackers to reduce waste and increase yields.
In today’s uncertain economic environment, nearly every business is having to re-evaluate the way they do business. And, it looks like the business of farming is no exception. According to a recent Columbus Dispatch news article, farmers are turning to GPS trackers to help them farm more efficiently, and get more from every dollar they invest in equipment, seeds, and field treatments. Here’s how farmers are using GPS trackers every day:
Reduce Waste: GPS trackers are helping farmers reduce the “overlapping” in fields that sometimes occurs due to human error. Reducing overlapping means that there’s much less waste of seeds, field treatments, and fuel over the course of a day’s work. This is achieved through automated steering systems, which range in sophistication levels and price.
Better Results: Some farmers are using GPS technology to help them determine which parts of each of their fields are performing the best and the worst–the process is known as yield mapping. This lets them know which parts of the field need more of their effort to produce the desired results.
Less Fatigue: Farmers using GPS tracking systems report less fatigue thanks to automated steering systems powered by GPS technology. This allows them to accomplish more with every work day.
With farmers feeling the economic crunch, and significant pressure to produce more with less, farming with GPS is on the rise. According to the Columbus Dispatch article, about 30 percent of the acres farmed in North America use GPS tracking technology.

GPS Trackers are helpful in preventing and solving crimes.
Several weeks ago we blogged about the city of memphis and surrounding counties preparing to track criminals with the help of GPS trackers. According to this recent article , the project is moving along.
Officials have selected real time GPS trackers, so they can see where each offender is at any given moment using GPS tracking software and an Internet connection. Staff working from the “Real Time Crime Center” will be responsible for monitoring the locations of those wearing the bracelet-style GPS trackers.
Currently, only around 300 GPS trackers are deployed, so plans to expand the program to 2,000 GPS trackers will be a considerable increase. The program will also include some offenders in some Arkansas and Mississippi counties. One goal of the program is to reduce crimes committed by repeat offenders. When a crime occurs, officials will immediately be able to determine is someone currently out on bail was in the area.
Did you know that the same technology being used to reduce crime in Memphis can help you run your business more efficiently? Check out GPS trackers at TrackingTheWorld for expert advice on cutting-edge GPS tracking technology for your business.

Just about every day we scour the news headlines looking for the latest on GPS tracking systems and GPS software…and the results are endless! From thefts averted, to innovative new uses for GPS tracking technology, we’ve found it all. Here’s a sampling of some of the recent headlines we’ve found.
Ring, Ring: After a Corpus Christi woman was robbed of her purse and GPS cell phone, she used GPS tracking software to assist police in recovering them. While the police were at the home of the alleged thief, they instructed the woman to call the phone. When they heard the phone ringing, they recovered it and returned it to the owner. See article here.
Hands-Free, Please: Some New Jersey lawmakers have introduced a bill to ban the manual use of GPS tracking systems in cars. Similar to cell phone and texting bans, the bill would require hands-free operation of GPS tracking units while driving….meaning that you’d have to pull over for manual programming. Read source article. But, what about the crazy folks who try to maneuver the freeway while consuming a giant bacon double cheeseburger?
More Power for Enduro GPS Users: In TrackingTheWorld company news, the extended battery pack for the rugged Enduro GPS tracking system is now available. The GPS battery pack is housed in an ultra-tough Pelican case, and will allow for up to 6 months of continuous use of the Enduro GPS tracker.

Can GPS tracking systems help prevent the spread of Swine Flu?
There’s no question that GPS trackers can help you protect your vehicles, and your loved ones, plus help your business save fuel and money. But- can they prevent the spread of swine flu? Officials in Japan want to find out. According to an ABC News Australia article, Japan health officials are considering tracking the population via cell phones equipped with GPS trackers, which would give them the ability to notify individuals who have crossed paths with someone who has the virus.
The idea, which reportedly was in the works before the recent Swine Flu outbreak, is set to undergo testing among some Japanese students next month…but will only include “virtually” infected people, not anyone who actually has the virus. The concept of using GPS tracking systems to track populations even for the purpose of preventing illness has stirred up plenty of controversy.
Some think the amount of data generated by such a project will be impossible to manage effectively…considering that millions of GPS trackers would be required to track an entire population. And, there’s the problem of reliability. In order for the project to provide reliable data, people would need to carry their GPS trackers every minute of the day.
Privacy advocates have also weighed in on the issue. The idea of using GPS tracking systems on a population-wide scale would probably face harsh criticism in many countries around the globe . But, apparently the concept has not faced that kind of opposition in Japan. In the original article, one source cited Japan’s love for using technology as a reason for being receptive to such an idea.

GPS trackers are often used in ambulances to help crews find addresses in emergencies.
If you’re going to steal an ambulance, make sure it’s not equipped with a GPS tracker. That was a lesson learned by one Kansas City, Missouri thief today after he was arrested for stealing an ambulance from a hospital parking lot while the crew was inside the hospital.
According to a FOX Channel 4 news article, a MAST crew member reported that GPS tracking systems are frequently used within their ambulances to assist medics in finding addresses during emergencies. But, this time, the company’s use of GPS trackers and GPS tracking software came in handy for finding the stolen ambulance.
The alleged crook allegedly crashed the ambulance before it was recovered, resulting in more than $100K in damage, and injuries which resulted in a legitimate trip in ambulance… not a joyride….ouch. See the entire article here.
GPS trackers provide an affordable way of protecting your automobiles, and heavy equipment from theft.
